The Trail of the Mountain God is a compellation of three stories about individuals faced with decisions challenging their very survival. All are loosely linked by a Native American heritage, which gives them access, and the desire to understand their own nature.
The first novella, THE TRAIL OF THE MOUNTAIN GOD is based on an actual event occurring when the now popular Olympic sport of Freestyle skiing was evolving. The young native American hero Timothy Allen Walden is faced with a clash between two cultures which challenges him to synthesize an entire new concept of self. It is the story of Tim’s desire to be an international champion and his duty at home with his aging grandparents. Tim and his companion, the wolf dog Buddy, ski the trail of the mountain god to an important life discovery. THE NIGHT THE RAINBOW TOUCHED THE EARTH deals with the adventures of a young pilot during World War II who tries to return to duty from a much deserved leave. Grayson Jeeter, flying a B-25 is forced to crash land his plane into the mountains of the southwest. His world of wartime violence is suddenly suspended and he is temporarily able to turn inward. Jeeter flourishes in isolation and rediscovers some of life’s imperatives and, more importantly, he finds love. A young anthropology graduate student stumbles into his camp and reveals secrets best left unknown. Jeeter’s lost love reincarnates, like the old Phoenix myth, in a forgotten canyon sacred to an ancient people.
The third piece, THE BADGE, is a true story of an actual act of unspeakable violence occurring in California in the 1920’s. It is based on the apprehension of one of the first, if not the first, serial killers in the state, Gordon Northcott. The hero of THE BADGE is Sheriff Jack Brown. Some parts have been fictionalized for obvious reasons but essentially the events are true. The story begins with the initial reports of several missing boys in San Bernardino County. Brown, an Indian trained tracker, was hired to search. Brown’s investigation led to Nothcott’s chicken farm in Wineville. Initial surveillance of the area uncovered evidence incriminating Northcott who then fled to Canada. Brown followed and apprehended him. He was returned to the U.S. where he was hanged October 2, 1930 in San Quentin Prison.
Jack H. Brown collaborator on THE BADGE is the CEO and President of Stater Bros markets. Walter Stump taught at the University of Southern Maine for 36 years where he was named Distinguished Scholar of Performing Arts. Until recently, Dr. Stump was director of the International Readers theatre Institute. He lives in Penn Valley, California. This book is available on

My husband and I have a natural affinity for Indian lore and legends. One

of my grandfathers brought Cree Indian blood into my veins. My husband's

grandmother gave him some Cherokee blood. We like honoring the Indians and

their ways that protect nature. The three stories in Walt Stump's novella do that.

I loved the novella idea as a long book often causes me to neglect

important duties. Reading what is like three short books was easy on my busy schedule and

they were all so different, each compelling and exciting.

Since I never mastered skiing, I felt like The Trail of the Mountain God

let me into the skiers' inner circle to enjoy some of what I've missed. Walt

Disney should make it into a movie.

The Night the Rainbow Touched the Earth was my husband's favorite because

it combined little known World War II facts with great love scenes. The

author must have some experience in the sex department as those scenes sure made

me squirm in my chair as I was reading them.

Although child molestation and murder are despicable, The Badge was my

favorite. I liked walking hand in hand with Jack Brown, a real American hero.

The Trail of the Mountain God edition by Walter Stump Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved each of the three novellas in the Trail of the Mountain God and hope the author, Walter Ray Stump, will publish more of his writings and his memoir. This book is the real deal and an honest-to-god page-turner. I hated for each novella to end. The central characters are masculine and heroic, but also recognizable as a real life American men. Young Timothy Walden, or Boy, in the title story, Grayson Jeeter in the Night the Rainbow Touched the Earth and Jack Brown, in The Badge each character vaults easily, almost effortlessly, out of their classic action-hero scenarios, because of love for a woman; and because of diffuse, almost inarticulate, but deeply held American Indian and natural world values. The crucial female characters Tim has Kathy; Grayson has Connie and later Estelle; Jack has Maria -- provide the embrace, the heat and synergy for the men's actions and eventual heroism.

The title story, The Trail of the Mountain God, is about the coming of age of a young freestyle skier, Timothy Walden, or "Boy" and his relationship to a much loved Grandpa, his dog Buddy and a fellow a skier named Kathy, set against the backdrop of Northeastern New England and freestyle ski competition.

In The Night the Rainbow Touched the Earth, pilot Grayson Jeeter crash lands a World War Two B-25 bomber (the Rainbow) onto a plateau, skidding into a rocky crevasse somewhere in Nevada or Utah. Grayson knows he must recover from his crash wounds to return to the outside world, but ultimately decides not to return and to stay where he is.

The Badge is the story of San Bernardino Deputy Sheriff Jack Brown who tracked and pursued Gordon Steward Northcott, a psychopathic, serial murderer and pedophile in the Los Angeles, Riverside area in the 1920`s. The Badge formed the basis of the movie, "The Changeling".
As a life-long reader, I've experienced all kinds of stories. The three novellas in this book touched on some of my favorite themes mystery, reality, romance, and spirituality from within.

The title story, The Trail of the Mountain God, is a beautiful coming-of-age tale of a young skier who discovers that struggles from outside of himself as well as from within are necessary to become the man he was meant to be. Over the years, colonization had scared away the wolf and caribou from his small pocket of New England; people had become less aware of the importance of sacred beliefs and no longer treated nature with honor. Timothy, or "Boy" to his grandfather, combines the best of his Native American and European heritages in his quest for fulfillment. Through his love and pursuit of success in skiing as well as his growing love for Kathy, another young skier, Boy lives his life with the growing realization that peace and harmony, along with hard work, are necessary to live the kind of life he needed to live. My heart was with him through his journey to reach that point. Did the wolf and caribou return? Read and find out!

In The Night the Rainbow Touched the Earth, Grayson Jeeter crash lands a World War Two B-25 bomber (the Rainbow) onto a plateau, skidding into a rocky crevasse somewhere in Nevada or Utah -- a storm had blown him off course and he doesn't know where he is. With his co-pilot dead, Jeeter must come to terms with his survival in isolation from everything he has ever known, including the lovely Connie, whom he had only met the night before but had connected with so completely. The time he spends alone is fascinating to read, how he survives and eventually thrives as he depends on only himself (at first) to do so. when Jeeter is given a rare and unexpected chance for love again, he finds the coming together of the two worlds he's experienced blend into a view of what his future might hold. The hope, courage, and joy of this story made me realize that what we might think we want out of life may turn out to be totally different from what we find.

The Badge was the toughest and most heart-wrenching to read. Violence against a defenseless child is never easy to read about and accept, yet it has been happening for years. Dr. Stump brings this true story to life in a factual, gut-grabbing way. A child molester and killer is active in Southern California in the 1920's. When one of the victims is a young friend of Deputy Sheriff Jack Brown of San Bernardino County, California, Brown dedicates himself to finding the killer. I don't want to give away the whole story, but suffice it to say that justice is done and you are there to experience it all in Dr. Stump's words which are filtered through his heart, mind, and creativity in his writing.

In all three of these novellas, Dr. Stump has let us into the minds, hearts (or lack thereof) and spirits of his characters. He makes them real.
